Ahhh, the first post of a new year and what better way to start it than with one of my favourite things - cheeseburgers.
I've posted before about Byron Burger and how they have seasonal special burgers but once a year they release the Cheesemas. A festive take on a burger that varies slightly year to year. I didn't get to try lasts years and I was kicking myself for missing out so I headed down to check their current take on it before it was too late.
To start with I opted for the classic Oreo milkshake. Thick, creamy and loaded with just the right amount of biscuity pieces. Thanks to the wide straw you don't end up getting them stuck, which in turn stops you from being able to drink it.
Not the best Oreo milkshake I've tried, which isn't to say it's bad. I just think I would have preferred if I'd opted for the Reese's Peanut Buttercup again. That's definetly a favourite and Byron do it so well.
As I knew the burger was going to be a biggy, I decided to skip the carbs and go for veggies ... Kinda. I wasn't sure what to expect from the coleslaw but it was shredded and seasoned to perfection. It had just the right amount of crunch and the cracked black pepper gave it a little something extra that I didn't know I needed.
Then came a little bowl of heaven, five golden rings! Onion rings that is. Huge, light and crispy is the only way I can describe them. Even looking at the photo as I write this is making me hungry. They were heavenly. When biting into them I found that the onion didn't get pulled out, leaving you with just the batter, which can only be a good thing. They almost tasted beer battered though I don't know if they are or not. Either way, delicious.
And then saving the best 'til last, we have the special. Described as two 6oz hamburgers, mature chedder, smoked bacon and onion relish, onion ring, bacon island sauce and pickles.
Look at that shine! Where do I begin with this monster? Bottom to top? Top to bottom? Let's start from the bottom. For the base of the burger, we have sliced pickles topped with lashings of bacon island sauce. Now I don't know about you but I don't know what that is. I feel like it's their own take on baconnaise. Either way, they don't scrimp and you'll find it dripping out the burger as soon as you try and take a bite. Then we have the two patties, loaded with cheese and sandwiched together with the relish, which reminds me of bacon jam. It acts as an almost glue in keeping the burger from falling apart and making sure they stay stacked on top of each other. Finishing with a crispy onion ring that gives a little sweetness to the burger. All sandwiched in a squishy bun. Though I did feel something was missing, perhaps some lettuce? Just something to give it a little more crunch.
An immense burger that you won't look dignified eating but isn't that half the fun? Needless to say, try as I might I had to leave a few mouthfuls as it defeated me.
